PS4 VS XBOX ONE

The PS4 was recently unveiled at the E3 along with a lot of information on the XBOX ONE. Some really cool features and some not so cool one were unveiled. For details on each, check out my in-depth posts about the Xbox One and the PS4. So, in this post, let's find out which one would make it's way into your living room this holiday season.

DESIGN:

Both of the console are pretty big in size. The PS4's design seems quite reminiscent to that of the PS2. This looks like a big brother to the PS2, only sexier. The console looks elegant and the fading blue line is quite subtle and give a premium feel. Check out some pics of the same:

On the other hand, the Xbox One's exterior casing consists of a two-tone "liquid black" finish, with half finished in a matte grey, and the other in a glossier black. The Xbox One is designed to evoke a more entertainment oriented and simplified design than the previous iteration of the console. That being said, some do feel the console to be a bit bulky and with the mandatory Kinect, the overall space occupied by the console is quite a lot. Take a look at console:

RESULT: I think the Playstation has won this round because of it's classier and more premium look, and due to a lot less bulk in it's design.

HARDWARE
Both these consoles have pretty much the same hardware and power under the hood, the PS4 being only slightly more powerful in terms of graphics and a bit superior architecture. So there is not much to separate them in terms of sheer specs. One thing to note is that the PS4 can render images and movies in 4K resolution but not 4K games, whereas the Xbox One can even render 4K games.
RESULT: At present it's a DRAW.

CONTROLLER:

The Xbox 360 controller was much appreciated by gamers and was preferred over the PS3 dual-shock controller. The new controllers are both upgrades over the previous gen controllers adding some noticeable new features.
RESULT: The Xbox One's controller feels a lot better than the dual-shock 4. It is more ergonomic than the latter  and has some neat features like those independent rumble motors called "Impulse Triggers" which would give directional vibrations.

SOFTWARE:
In terms of software features, the Xbox One wins hands down with a seamless integration with windows 8 and it's app ecosystem. With the kinect, Microsoft has incorporated many gesture features and voice recognition features which allow a seamless user experience with shifting between multiple apps, games,, movies etc.
On the other hand, the PS4 offers similar set of online features that were offered by the PS3. The multiplayer gaming is enhanced where you may help a friend stuck on a difficult level etc.
RESULT: The Xbox One wins this round due it's nifty features and gives users a whole new experience to look into.

BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY:
The PS4 is Backward compatible with the help of online streaming service called Gaikai whereas the Xbox One simply doesn't support last-gen games.
RESULT: The PS4 wins this round.

CONCLUSION:
The PS4 is quite a capable gaming console same as the Xbox One.
Here are some points in favour of the PS4 and the Xbox One after which you may decide for yourself which is the one for you.

PS4:

The Playstation 4 is a really good gaming console. It is for those who are just love playing games on their console and want a personal console instead of an entertainment device with privacy issues. They want better graphics and some great exclusive game titles as Sony has always got better exclusives for it's consoles. All in all, at 400$ you won't be disappointed with your choice as this console can do gaming and do it pretty well(what else do you expect from a gaming console?).

Xbox One:
Being bundled with the Kinect at 500$, the Xbox One is a great entertainment device with many advantages. It has good hardware and with the Kinect ever present, more developers may produce games taking advantage on the Kinect which would enhance the gaming experience. The integration of amazing gesture features , windows 8 apps and the new DRM policies, the console looks very promising. The only issue right now is with some apparent privacy issues caused by Kinect being always on. Apart from that, if you are really into entertainment and don't mind the 100$ price difference, you may seriously take a look at the One for a much better overall user experience.
