Planning to buy a new cell phone? Not sure what to look for in a cellphone. Well here I am to solve your problem. I am listing some basic points which should be considered before spending your hard earned money on a mobile device.
So, the first thing you need to do is jot-down a list of priorities. The most important question is "What do you want to do on your cellphone?". Think of the things that are most important to you and that you would spend most of the time doing on your cellphone. Don't let your list be more than 5 points. Rest of the points can be considered as secondary.Once, you have made a list, read through it again and again and you would find yourself changing the order of the tasks several times. To know more about Mobile Processors(CPU and GPU) read my post about mobile processors.
After all this hard work, it is the time to select the phone that is perfect for you.
Now, according to your list and your budget, the number of
cellphones in your shortlist would come down from 5 or maybe 6 to as low as 2 or 3. After you have shortlisted cell phones according to your needs, the following points should help you choose the one for you. :

- Build Quality- This is quite an important aspect to consider as you won't like your cellphone to break into pieces when you drop it for the very first time itself.( Believe me, you are going to drop your cellphone quite a lot.)
- Design- If you don't have this already on your list, then this is another significant point to note before purchasing a cellphone. You don't want your cellphone to look like a freaking fat walky-talky.
- Display Quality: How to choose a display
- RAM- Now this is quite important as this keeps your cellphone working smooth. Even if you are not a power user, having extra RAM won't hurt.
- Service Center- This is another important aspect especially for people who buy unlocked phones like we do here in India. You should prefer a cellphone over the other depending on how close the service center is.
These points would most probably be enough for you to help select the right phone.
Consider the following example:
Suppose my budget is around Rs 15,000 and I sit down to compile the list to help me buy a cellphone. My priorities are:

Consider the following example:
Suppose my budget is around Rs 15,000 and I sit down to compile the list to help me buy a cellphone. My priorities are:
- BUILD QUALITY: My cellphone should be reasonably well built so that it is able to bear the day to day wear and tear along with those occasional drops.
- GAMING : I love to play games on my cellphone to kill that spare time I have. Ranging from light arcade games to the graphic intensive games, I want my cellphone to be able to run all of them without any hiccup. That means I need atleast 1GB of RAM and a good processor. Also I need enough space on my device to be able to install many applications without any worries.
- DISPLAY: I consume a lot of media on my device ranging from surfing through pics to watching movies to surfing the net. Hence, I need a display with a good ppi so that my eyes are not strained after watching the display for a relatively long period of time.
The rest of the things are secondary for me. I am not really bothered about the brand which I carry, as long as the product itself is worthy enough. So the Gionee Dream D1 is a perfect device for me. It has got a beautiful and vibrant HD Amoled display with Gorilla Glass 2 protection. The device is fairly well built and is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor based on the Cortex-A7 architecture coupled with 1GB RAM making it quite capable for gaming. The good battery life and decent camera are a bonus.
(Disclaimer: This is just my personal choice. In no way is my choice influenced by any company or executive. This is not a promotion and I am not being paid by any means).
