BUYING GUIDE: HOW TO BUY A LAPTOP

So, you are out in the market and looking for a laptop which suites your requirements the best. You go into a store and find a jungle of laptops with a vast range of variety.

All the way from Ultrabooks, to Gaming laptops to lifestyle to business. Now your mind starts boggling by looking at awkward processor numbers and terms like RAM and Graphics, terms you have absolutely no knowledge about. The result of all this is, that you either end up buying a really expensive laptop with has torn apart your budget or simply end up buying a crap machine. Morale of the story? Read this post before you decide to go shopping a laptop so as to save your wallet from the shrewd salesman.

First of all, take a pen and paper and note down the things you would like to do the most on your laptop and make a list of the most important factors in descending order. Now after making your list and deciding your budget, and Weight to your list. Now, at first, it would seem that weight is not an important factor but over time, you would find that it is quite an important factor. Your list would generally be based on the following points:
Do you intend to you your laptop for doing office work like mostly MS Office and emails etc. Or are you a gamer and would like to watch movies and basically just use your laptop for entertainment. Or do you just need it for browsing the web? Another important fator can be Operating System.RAM is  a key factor for a laptop. So to know more about RAM and the optimum amount of ram for you, visit my post about RAM.

Now that you have got your list, let's see what you need. Let's say you need your laptop for office use  only. This also means you might travel alot. So for this you need to buy ultrabooks, which is a term corresponding to laptops which are thin, light and portable with intel chips inside and ssd. Buying an ultrabook would be enough for you as these have 8-10 hours of battery life(with the new 4th gen Haswell chips, the battery life is generally be around that 12 hour mark). These systems are ample for your use and may meet with all your requirements. You can very well settle for a core i3 processor as it is ample for your needs. Again the amount of RAM is another limiting factor.
Ultrabooks
But what if you what a lifestyle laptop? Is the Ultrabook for you too?
Well not really. First of all, you need a good graphics processor for gaming and redering movies on external displays, the bare-minimum being 1GB. You may be well off with a core i3, but if your budget permits, go for a core i5 processor. No need to spend extra money on a core i7 as it is just not required.
For hard-core gamers, you need atleast a 2GB graphics card and may go for core i7 processor if budget permits. But do give graphics card an upper say over processor.
Gaming and Lifestyle

Finally if you are the guy, who would just open up his laptop and just go to your browser and start surfing the net or kill time on the social networks, then you don't need to spend alot on your laptop. You may get a Chromebook(a laptop running on chrome os) which is the perfect companion for you. It can be a great secondary option for those in the above list as these cost starting 250$ and are light and portable with good battery backup. You might find alternatives to all your generic Microsoft apps like office with in Google's web clients. So you may save a lot of money by buying one of these.
