After 7 long years, Sony finally launched it's next gen gaming console, the PlayStation 4. There was a lot of hype about the next gen consoles. Let's see what are the changes in the new consoles.
DESIGN-
The console's design was recently unveiled at the E3. First of all enjoy some photos of the same:
The design is quite minimalistic and looks to be inspired by the PS2.
It seems quite elegant to me with a subtle blue colour which fades along, giving it a classy look in my opinion. Do let me know about your thoughts in the comments below.
HARDWARE-
Underneath the elegant design, lies a pretty powerful processing unit. Sony has coordinated with AMD to build a custom Accelerated Processing Unit(APU), which has a combined CPU and GPU. The CPU consists of 8 cores based on the x86-64 architecture. The consoles also has a secondary chip that can handle tasks like downloading, uploading etc. in the background and even when the system is in sleep mode. The console has 8GB of DDR5 RAM with a maximum bandwidth of 176Gb/s. The unified architecture allows the cpu and gpu utilize the same memory.
CONTROLLER-
The DualShock 4 controller is an upgrade to the previous gen with a couple of changes. First of all it has a new touch-pad. Instead of the start and select button, this comes with a Option button along with PS button and Share button. The Joysticks are now concave instead of convex to avoid slipping. Overall, the DualShock 4 feels a lot more ergonomic.
SOFTWARE-
The PS4 doesn't require an internet connection. No validation, lend games and buy used games. On the other hand, the PSN will allow access to a variety of cloud based services such as unlimited music and video streaming from the PlayStation Store. You can instantly share parts of gameplay and help your friend if he is stuck on a difficult level. Amazon and Netflix is available along with online multiplayer gaming. Games purchaed online can be played while downloading which i think is a great feature.
BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY-
As of now, the PS4 won't support games of older generation consoles but Sony has thought of a long term solution to this problem. Sony is planning to launch online streaming of games to tackle backward compatibility and through Gaikai, a company acquired by Sony.
CONCLUSION-
All in all, the PS4 looks quite a promising console. It has got great features and the price is quite attractive at 400$ in the U.S.
Thus it is safe to conclude that this could be #TheNextBigThing.
