Though one of the most important part of your computer setup is audio, still most people generaly forget about it or don't really research much about the same. They either end up buying a crap speaker set or do not get the type of sound they expected from their expensive speaker set. Today I am going to tell you about a really simple yet effective device, which can enhance the overall sound output from your speakers. This device is called DAC: Digital To Analog Convertor. To understand what this device is, read on. Mind you, the following is strictly valid to only audiophiles(people who are really passionate about music and really understand the difference between different lows, mids and highs etc.).
DAC:
Digital to Analog convertor is a small device which converts a digital signal to analog signal. Digital signals are in the binary code, the 0's and 1's, in which all the data on a computer is saved. Similarly audio files are saved as 0's and 1's which need to be converted into analog signals which can be heard by humans.
Every computer has a built in DAC (the 3.5mm jack). These are usually present on th motherboard itself. But these are generally of not great quality which intern degrade the overall sound output quality. Even the best quality speakers won't sound to their full potential through the in-built DAC when compared to that through an external audiophile DAC's.
Why Are They Better?
The DACs convert digital signals to analog signals without the loss of any significant amount of data. These are basically the source for your speakers. Thus if the source isn't good enough, the output cannot be good. The 8-bit ones are generally available in the market and may significantly improve the sound quality out of your speakers.
Do I Need It?
Audiophile DACs are not cheap by any means. So the immediate question in your mind would be, "Do I need one?".
Well, the answer is, "It depends on you". Yes it totally depends on you. If you are very enthusiastic about music and understand the different highs, mids and lows, then you may consider spending money on an external audiophile DAC.
But if you are a person who likes to listen to music but don't really go deep into all of the different pitches etc. then, I will not recommend you to spend on an external DAC. Just buy a good pair of headphones and save the rest of your money.
DACs are perfect for audiophiles who require concert or recording like music in their homes.
P.S.- I did not include the types of DACs to keep this post simple. If you want, I may write a seperate post for you audiophiles out there.
