The smartphone market has grown leaps and bounds with more and more people drifting to buy these palm sized computers. A high percentage of people buy smartphone which fall in the mid-range category. In such a scenario, the two phones which come to one's mind are the Motorola Moto G and the Micromax Canvas Magnus A117. Both of these phones fit the mid-range category for cellphones. The obvious question arises, which is better?
First of all, read the individual reviews of both these devices to know what they are all about. : Moto G review and Canvas Magnus review.
Now that you have a basic idea of these devices, let us see which phone fairs well in different aspects of a cellphone.
Design, Build Quality and Display:
Build quality of the Motorola Moto G is nice with good quality of plastics used. The design and handling is exceptional and the phone feels really good in the hand. The relatively small display size of 4.5 inch makes the phone quite ergonomic and comfortable to hold and use. The display is sufficiently large for most of the people and will suffice in day to day usage. Infact it's smaller size facilitates single handed usage.
Camera:
The Moto G comes with a 5MP primary camera with LED Flash whereas the Magnus has a bigger 12 MP sensor with LED Flash. The camera on the Canvas Magnus is simply much better than that of the Moto G. The outdoor capabilities are somewhat similar, the results on the Magnus being slightly better. The real difference rises in the low light and indoor capabilities. The Magnus shoots pictures and videos which are a couple of notches above that shot from the Moto G. The Magnus is capable of recording full HD videos compared to the 720p HD video recording of the Moto G. Overall the in the camera department, the Canvas Magnus is a winner hands-down.
Winner: Micromax Canvas Magnus
Software:
The software on the Moto G is Android 4.2.2 Kitkat while that on the Canvas Magnus is still 4.2 Jellybean. The software is probably one of the best things on the Moto G after it's hardware. Along with the latest version of android, the Moto G has a really simple design with almost stock android. Motorolla has added only two of it's own application onto the device which ensures maximum storage space is available to the user. The Canvas Magnus also has a stock look but comes with many pre-installed apps with many being just advertisements just contributing to the bloatware reducing the already less storage space even further. The software on the Moto G is properly optimized for the device which enables the device to run really smoothly and with any visible lags. On the other hand, Micromax has not optimised the device's software properly which leads to frequent freezing of the phone and some lag here and there. Thus the Moto G wins this round as of now till Micromax releases a software update for the Magnus(unlikely though).
Winner: MOTO G
Gaming and Battery Life:
The gaming capabilities of both the phone are quite similar though the Moto G performs better on high graphic games. The higher internal storage also helps installation of many high graphic games at once. The Canvas Magnus is also good for gaming but it is limited by internal storage.
The battery life on Moto G is phenominal and cannot be matched by any other device in it's class or for that matter even many above it's class. The phone delivers a solid whole day and a half on an average and really blows the competition out of the water. The battery on the Canvas Magnus is a massive one and lasts a decent full working day but this cannot match that on the Moto G.
Winner:MOTO G
Conclusion:
Both the phones are really nice phones for their super cheap price point when looking at the specs. Both are available around
Rs.13000 in India. The Moto G is a really nice and balanced device to buy baring it's camera. So, if you are a person who loves to take a lot of photos and videos from his/her cellphone and like to have a big screen then you should go for the Micromax Canvas Magnus A117 else for everything else the Moto G edges the Canvas Magnus.

On the other hand, the Canvas Magnus has nice finish with aluminium casing at the back which, not only provides sturdiness but also boosts the signal strength. The design of the phone is much like the other Micromax phones. The 5 inch phone is comfortable to hold but it might not be a single handed device for most people. The display is quite large and multimedia consumption i.e. watching videos and playing games is really enjoyable.

Hardware:
The Moto G and the Canvas Magnus both offer fabulous hardware for the price. Both offer quad core processors based on the ARM Cortex A7 processor though the one on the Magnus is clocked slightly higher. The Moto G is powered by 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor along with Adreno 305 from Qualcomm. On the other hand the Canvas Magnus comes with a Mediatek MT6589T chipset along with PowerVR SGX544MP gpu.
Though the chipsets sound similar, the Qualcomm one has a slightly better performance in the real world usage. One more thing that favours the Moto G is that the Adreno 305 pairs up with the Snapdragon a lot better as compared to the other pair. This significantly improves the performance of the device as compared to Magnus. The higher internal storage is also a big boost for the Moto G as it does no limit the number of apps that one can install when compared to Canvas Magnus. The advantage for the Magnus is that it has a miro-sd card slot which enables the storage of large data and a lot of media. Another thing is that though both the phones support USB OTG functionality, the Moto G requires a paid app(Nexus Media Importer) to be installed to use the same. Last but not the least, Moto G comes with nano-coating on the outside and inside which makes it water-resistant which is a big advantage over the Canvas Magnus.
