Samsung announced a plethora of new companion devices in the Gear devices. The first Galaxy Gear had it's successors announced in the Unpacked 2014 event in MWC 2014 held in Barcelona. Three new Gear devices namely, the Gear 2, the Gear Neo and the Gear Fit were launched.
The successor to the original Galaxy Gear was launched yesterday. The new Galaxy Gear 2 is a really nice advancement over the previous version of the Gear. It has been slimmed down along with the change of the placement of the camera. The new Gear has been built on the Tizen platform instead of the Android platform. This does not translate onto the user interface as it resembles the older UI. It comes with a 1.65 inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 320*320 pixels.
The new Gear has a pedometer, a heart beat tracker along with an IR Blaster. The heart beat sensor is in continuous contact with the skin and thus sends constant feedback to parent app in one's mobile phone. These have replaceable bands with are available in different colours.
The battery life on the Gear 2 and Gear Neo is also improved and according to Samsung, it can last for up to 3 days which is thrice as much as it's predecessor. Not only this, it also comes with 4GB of internal storage which helps one to store a lot of media and data on the Gear. This facilitates the listening of music on the go without the need of your phone to be nearby.
To ensure connectivity, the Gear 2 and the Gear Neo support 17 galaxy devices. The Galaxy Neo is a slightly a tonned down and thus cheaper variant of the Galaxy Gear 2.
The Gear Fit is a totally different device. It's thinner, slimmer and lighter with a weight of just 27 grams. It has a 1.84 inch curved AMOLED display which facilitates it being really narrow and fit perfect with the wrist. This different design surely sets it apart from the squarish Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. It runs on a Samsung proprietary OS and promises to deliver a battery life of about 3-4 days. It has a gyroscope, a Heart Rate sensor, accelerometer.
The Gear Fit has a pedometer which tracks one's steps and the Heart Rate Sensor along with the app on the smartphone helps users to regulate the intensity of their workout based on their heart rate. This helps a person to workout properly without stressing out one's body.
The Gear devices launched by Samsung are certainly a big advancement from what the Galaxy Gear was. These have combat most of the customer grievances along with introducing newer and more useful features. The extended battery life was one of the most required thing and that was met by replacing Android with a lighter OS. The style quotient has been met by a more stylish Gear Fit which not only provides a good design but also act as a very good fitness trainer.
All said and done, we will have to wait and watch how successful these Gear devices turn out to be. Whether or not do they fair well, it is a good improvement over the previous version. Let's wait for the retail version to know more about these devices.
