Sony Xperia M2 Review

The Sony Xperia M2 is the successor of the not so popular Sony Xperia M. The second iteration of the M series is another mid range phone from Sony with bumped up hardware and software. At a price point of Rs 20,000, the Xperia M2 has quite a lot of competition from both International and Local brands. The devices like the Galaxy Grand 2, the Motorola Moto G, the LG L90 etc. will be real tough competitors for the device. Let's see whether this device can make it's own mark in the mid-range section of the market or will it succumb to better options already available in the market right now.

DESIGN AND BUILD:

The Sony Xperia M2 has a very "Xperia" design. It is very similar in design to the Xperia Z2 and is a very good looking phone. The phone has 4.8 inch screen in the front without any hardware buttons. Thus the front is quite appealing in my opinion. The corners are rounded so as help the phone with a comfortable fit in the hand. The right side of the phone consists of the big metallic power button which is both appealing and easy to use. The volume and camera keys are quite tactile. This side also contains the slots for the two micro sim cards. The 3.5 mm headphone jack is placed on the top. The left side of the device consists of the charging port and the micro sd card slot.
The back of the device is a place of concern. It has a plastic finish on the back which has been given a really glossy finish making it appear to be a back made of glass. Though , at the first look it does make the phone look appealing and premium but the sad part is that this plastic is very prone to scratches. These scratches would eventually ruin the look of the device after some usage.
The phone's design has also got another down side. Though the screen is only a 4.8 inch screen, the height of the device is bigger compared to even some 5 inch mobile phones. This can be a issue for some people who like their phones to be compact. Overall the design has both good and bad points.

The build of the phone is very solid with a good quality of plastics used( apart from the glossy back). The phone is quite well built and can easily last for a long time without any physical issues.

RATING: 7.5/10

Display:

The display on the Xperia M2 is 4.8 inch in size and is an IPS grade screen. It has a resolution of qHD or 540*960 which gives the phone a pixel density of approximately 229 ppi. Seems too low? Well if you closely enough, you would certainly find pixelation and jagged text. But, the display is not as bad as it sounds. The display is a big step up from the predecessor (the Xperia M). The viewing angles and colour reproduction has improved quite a lot. The Xperia M2 has a nice display with good colour reproduction and nice viewing angles. The size being 4.8 inches is also a bonus for those who like to consume a lot of media on their mobile phones. The only con is the low pixel density which is noticeable if one moves from a device with a greater pixel density than this. All in all the display can be passed as good.

RATING: 7.5/10

Hardware:

The Xperia M2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2 Ghz along with Adreno 305 GPU. The phone comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. It also supports a micro sd card. The phone is a dual sim one and accepts two micro-sims.
The processor and ram combination is a good one for the device as it is quite smooth to operate without any noticeable lag. The phone is very capable for running day to day apps without any issues. All in all the performance of the phone is quite satisfactory for a mid-range device.

RATING: 8/10

Software:

The software on the Sony Xperia M2 is Android Jellybean ( 4.3) with a guaranteed update to Android Kitkat 4.4 as promised by Sony. The software consists of a custom skin of Sony over the stock android which adds added functionality along with many apps. This also means that the device is loaded with a bit of bloatware. Some of the apps installed can be removed which is a good thing. The Sony is a refined and an optimised skin which does not add much load on the phone's processor and thus helps in making the phone relatively smooth. The phone performs day to day tasks without any issues and works just fine. The skin put by Sony helps in adding "Small Apps" which are essentially apps which can be opened over previously running apps. Certain small/quick apps like Calculator and Notes are really very useful.  The Sony Walkman music player is also a very good addition to the phone. Though this added functionality is there, still certain bloatware might bug some users due to low internal memory of just 8 GB.

RATING: 8/10

Camera:

The camera on the Sony Xperia M2 is an 8 MP shooter with LED flash. The secondary camera is just a VGA camera. Coming to the quality, the M2 performs well in this department and can be considered to produce average to above average results. Keeping in mind that this is a mid-range phone, the camera performance is acceptable. The pictures produces by the f/2.4 lens is quite nice in daylight and outdoor lighting. The pictures come out to be sharp with good colour reproduction. One little con can be the processing of images which sharpens the images a bit too much to my liking. Otherwise, the pictures are quite good and this phone can be used for taking casual photos. The indoor and low light pictures taken from the phone turned out to be average with okay-ish details. The flash worked fine for me given ample light to the subject. Though this is true, sometimes, the pictures did not turn out to be good. The front facing camera is just a VGA camera and it does not perform well in my opinion. It is just average and certainly cannot be used for "selfies".

RATING: 8/10

Gaming:

The Sony Xperia M2 has an Adreno 305 GPU along with 1GB of RAM. This combination is really capable of running all the games smoothly on the phone. Ranging from small games like Subway Surfer, Temple Run etc. to some heavy games like Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8 etc., all run on the phone without any issues. The games run smoothly without any lags. The only con here is that the phone has just 8 GB of internal storage which might not be enough for some people who like to keep many high end and heavy games on their devices. Also though the phone supports a micro sd card, sadly the apps cannot be moved to it. So this might be an issue for some people.
Another con here is that while gaming, the phone's area around the camera gets a little warn or hot.

RATING: 8/10

Battery Life and Connectivity:

The Battery on the Sony Xperia M2 is a sealed in 2300 mAh battery. The battery life on the phone is nice and the phone can run for about a full working day with normal usage. The big battery with the power saving processor is quite nice.
The phone supports 3G, Wifi (dual band) and has two sim card slots. The phone accepts micro sim cards. The call quality is nice and the wifi speeds are also good.

RATING: 8/10

Additional Features:

The phone supports NFC and dual band Wifi.

OVERALL RATING: 8/10

Conclusion:

The Xperia M2 certainly packs a punch with a good display, nice hardware and well optimised software. The added functionality in the software are a big advantage. The good camera and good gaming capabilities further help it's cause . The only downside is the big size of the phone and a big price tag of Rs 20,000. If you want a good camera and appreciate NFC then you may seriously consider this phone. But if you do not require these then you may consider other options like the Motorola Moto G or the Lg L90

Pros:                                                      Cons:

   Good Display                                          Large Dimensions
Nice processor and RAM                        Glossy plastic used
Decent Gaming Capabilities                   for back case
   and nice battery life.
NFC enabled and dual band Wifi.
